Missing tooth? Lacking confidence when you chew or speak? Unable to eat the foods you love? Discomfort caused by dentures or bridges? In need of a comprehensive overhaul of ageing and failing dental work? Basically, is your mouth preventing you from enjoying life to the full?
At Edinburgh Dental Studio we believe that we can help with all of these problems. We have a skilled practitioner who is fully qualified and experienced in dental implant surgery and the other cosmetic procedures which can restore your dental confidence and performance. We are proud to be able to place implants for most our patients and finish the implants in the comfort of our West End Dental Practice – we aim to be the number one choice for Implants in Edinburgh.
A missing tooth (or several missing teeth) or an uncomfortable, loose fitting denture can make life miserable. Your speech, your self-confidence, even your ability to eat the foods that you love can be affected by deteriorating fillings and ill-fitting bridges and dentures.
On top of this, for oral health reasons it is important to replace a missing tooth. If you have one or more gaps your remaining teeth can start to move or twist causing them to become misaligned and food and bacteria can get stuck in the resulting gaps risking potential gum disease and tooth decay. Nor do the effects just take place inside your mouth – missing teeth can cause sagging in the facial skin making your look older.
Dental implants have revolutionised dentistry and are the next best thing to having a new natural tooth. From replacing a single missing tooth and combining this with other cosmetic procedures, to giving you back a complete mouthful of secure and fully functional teeth, implants can be life changing.
In a standard, straight forward procedure it usually only takes around 1 hour. Your dental implants will be placed under local anaesthetic and you should feel no pain during the procedure. You may experience some discomfort or swelling in the days afterwards but this should improve with standard painkillers and a cold compress.
Dental implants are a highly suitable option for the majority of patients. It doesn’t matter how old you are, the condition of your existing teeth or how many teeth you need replaced.
Every patient is different and your needs will be discussed with you fully before any work starts. Please feel free to ask any questions so that you fully understand what is involved and feel comfortable about what to expect.
The most important factors to consider are that you have a good standard of general health and are prepared to maintain good oral health. This will determine your potential for a good recovery. If you have diabetes or are a heavy smoker you are at a greater risk of developing gum disease or infections following surgery and therefore, dental implants may not be suitable for you.
The health of your gums and the bone density in your jaw are both very important as this is ultimately what will hold your implants in place! Don’t despair if you’ve had previous issues with gum disease as we can work with you to optimise gum health before and after treatment,
Dental implants are a bespoke treatment and will vary from patient to patient. A fully individualised treatment plan will be provided for you to consider prior to you agreeing to go ahead with treatment. As a guide, the following costs are likely for a single implant.
Initial Consultation with Dentist Complimentary
Insertion of implant From £1500
New tooth (crown) From £850
Pre-treatment Hygienist Visit 1 visit complimentary, subsequent visits £67.50
CT Scan £150
Treatment Plan £95 (refunded when treatment commences)
Surgical Extraction £250 (not always required)
Bone Grafting From £500
To avoid infection and discomfort, it is important to keep up good oral hygiene in order. Following treatment you will require some recovery time to allow the implants to fuse and the gum to heal. It is important to keep the gums clean during this time. You should brush the gums gently every day to avoid a build-up of plaque.
Dental implants are a highly successful treatment- with over 95% taking successfully. When well looked after and properly maintained they have the potential to last for many years. Treat them as you would your normal teeth. Be sure to brush twice a day and pay attention to your gums by flossing and using interdental devices. We encourage our patients to attend regular Hygiene and Dental Health Checks.
