Teeth whitening is a process where tooth discolouration is whitened to a lighter shade. It removes the staining agent through chemical means. It is a safe procedure when carried out under professional supervision and treatment results depend on the severity of the discolouration.
Both vital (i.e. live) and non-vital teeth (e.g. teeth with root removed) can be whitened. It is not effective on dental restorations such as fillings, metal or porcelain crowns, etc.
We offer two levels of teeth whitening in Edinburgh.
The Enlighten Evolution teeth whitening system is the Gold Standard in teeth whitening and combines home whitening with a follow up session of power whitening in surgery to seal the results.
In addition, in advance of treatment, we offer a session of Dental Hygiene with Airflow Cleaning to get the process off to a flying start. Enlighten is the technological leader in professional teeth whitening – a US based research laboratory, they pride themselves on their ability to produce cutting-edge products that really make a visible difference to your smile and your self-confidence.
The key to the success of Enlighten is that it works safely and painlessly, yet at the same time it also provides predicable results. The main brand in the Enlighten stable is called Evolution. Depending on how your teeth are at the beginning of the process, Enlighten Evolution can whiten your teeth by up to ten shades. In fact, Enlighten claim that Evolution is the only product to guarantee that any patient will whiten to at least B1.
After whitening, we recommend regular Dental Hygiene (with Airflow) visits to maintain a healthy mouth and remove stains. In addition you can use your home-whitening trays to top-up as necessary at home. Top-up gels can be purchased on prescription from your Dentist. Generally most people will top up once every other month to maintain the results with the home whitening system, or a couple of nights every few months. If you do not maintain and then need to re-whiten with power whitening, the whole procedure will need to be repeated. Re-whitening may be necessary after 2-3 years, but this depends on the amount of staining products you consume and the method of whitening.
In general most people can have the treatment. There are a small number of people for whom it is advised treatment is not immediate – pregnant and nursing women (although there are no known adverse reactions) and patients with pre-existing sensitivity (this should be addressed before commencing whitening treatments). If you have had dental work on your front teeth – such as crowns, white fillings or veneers – teeth whitening may not be suitable as the materials used do not whiten or if you are still keen to proceed, you may need additional work to replace these (see below).
Yes, your teeth will appear brighter and whiter which will give you a healthier, youthful and attractive smile. The improvement is usually several shades lighter and with Enlighten shade B1 is achievable. Cosmetic experts say that the teeth should be similar in colour, but no lighter than the whites of your eyes. It should be noted that if you are a smoker or consume large amounts of black coffee, tea or red wine these stains may not be removed and will build up again after treatment. It is advisable to see the hygienist prior to treatment to remove intrinsic stains. Also it is best to stop smoking and the consumption of stain creating foods/drinks while undergoing treatment – and keep them to a minimum afterwards if you wish to maintain the benefits.
No. The whitening only affects natural tooth substance so crowns and fillings remain the same colour. The fillings and crowns can be restored to the lighter shade of the teeth after treatment without any problems. Normally the dentist will wait 2 weeks after the completion of whitening before replacing fillings and crowns. It is important that you are aware of this so that any additional treatment is not an unanticipated financial burden.
If the teeth have white spots on them before whitening, these spots will appear lighter initially.
Teeth whitening is becoming more and more popular in the UK. As more and more people are looking for affordable opportunities to improve the quality of their smile, more products have become available and the range of different treatments and solutions on offer can be quite confusing. It is illegal for anyone other than dental professionals to offer whitening and for your safety we strongly advise against teeth whitening by non-dental professionals – who often use illegal whitening products and strengths. Over the counter whitening products are generally ineffective as the strength of these whitening products is very low.
Yes, but these are minor and not long lasting. The most common is tooth sensitivity and slight irritation of the gums. These generally last for a few days. Others include sore throat if excess material is not removed and is swallowed, altered taste sensation and caffeine/tobacco withdrawal symptoms if patients rapidly stop during the whitening procedure. Extensive research has been conducted into the technique, which showed that it was safe, effective and worked extremely well.
Tooth sensitivity is the most common side effect of teeth whitening. The best indicator of whether you may experience this side effect is if you personally think that having you teeth professionally cleaned by the dental hygienist is unpleasant. If you opt for Enlighten Evolution whitening with us, we recommend that you use Enlighten’s sensitivity toothpaste to clean your teeth for a few weeks before and after teeth whitening treatment and Enlighten have a teeth serum to treat teeth that are very sensitive and this can be applied inside your whitening trays.
If you want a brighter smile but do not need a guaranteed B1 shade, we would be delighted to provide you with the tools and expertise to enhance your smile in the comfort of your own home using our own brand teeth whitening kits.
Enlighten Evolution is a “combination” whitening process combining home whitening with “in chair” dental professional time. The Edinburgh Dental Studio fee for Enlighten is £597.00 – including a session for Airflow Cleaning prior to treatment (value £67.50), home whitening kit and a final power whitening session with the Dentist or Hygiene Therapist. This can be split into three payments – £199 at booking, £199 at your appointment for impressions, and £199 at your final power whitening session. The fee for Enlighten reflects the work that is put into achieving a guaranteed B1 result. (Some patients may require a longer home whitening period to achieve B1 and this will cost an additional £49).
Edinburgh Dental Studio teeth whitening is available for £395. We offer complimentary Edinburgh Dental Studio whitening at the end of treatments such as Invisalign and Six Month Smiles.
Make a free, no obligation appointment with our Treatment Co-ordinator who will discuss the procedures that we offer and determine whether you are a suitable patient. If you decide to go ahead, she will make a short appointment with the dentist to make sure that you are dentally fit, (and arrange your Airflow clean with the Hygienist, if you choose the Enlighten package).
Air polishing uses compressed air, water and a fine flavoured powder to gently and naturally remove plaque and stubborn stains from the teeth.
AirFlow treatment is ideal for painlessly ridding teeth of the stains caused by tea, coffee, red wine, curries and nicotine and will return them to their spotlessly clean, natural colour. It is also recommended before teeth whitening procedures, as it will help improve the final result.Return to the Services page Return to Top
