What treatment options are available?

Composite restoration

We can directly replace small amalgam fillings with composite. In a single appointment lasting 30-90 minutes, we completely remove the existing amalgam and apply the composite material in layers.

Porcelain onlay / crown

For larger amalgam fillings, cracked, weak or compromised teeth, we can place a natural looking porcelain onlay or crown. They provide additional strength and protection to your tooth, and are completed across two appointments at the practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How will I know if my amalgam fillings need replacing?

The main reason you may decide to replace your amalgam fillings will be cosmetic, and to improve the overall appearance of your teeth. However, if your amalgam filling is very old, chipped, crumbling or becoming loose, we may suggest that it needs to be taken out.

  • Is the treatment painful?

Replacing your amalgam filling shouldn’t be painful, especially if you are having a composite filling or onlay fitted in its place. Composite is built up directly onto the tooth in layers, requiring no removal of your existing tooth structure and no drilling is required.

  • What happens if I don’t want to replace my amalgam fillings?

It is absolutely fine for you to keep your amalgam fillings, provided they are still strong, intact and giving protection to your tooth. If there is any decay present underneath or near to the amalgam, we will likely suggest a replacement to ensure your tooth remains healthy.

  • Can composite material be placed directly over amalgam instead?

It is best to completely remove the amalgam and start again. There could be decay present underneath the amalgam that we would need to address, and it can take a lot of work to ensure the composite fully covers the silver for a truly aesthetic result. It does not take long for us to remove and replace the amalgam filling and we can complete the treatment in one appointment.
