What are invisible fillings?

Composite fillings offer an aesthetic way to fill cavities, rebuild and restore teeth. Dental composite is a tooth coloured resin made from a mixture of plastic and glass, which beautifully mimics tooth enamel when set. Originally only used for front teeth, modern advancements in composite mean it is now able to be used effectively on any tooth.

The main advantage of composite fillings is their aesthetic appeal. They are also minimally invasive, as less of your natural tooth structure needs to be removed to make way for the composite material. Invisible fillings have always been considered less long lasting than traditional silver amalgam, but modern composite material now has similar properties and is a durable choice.

What does the treatment involve?

What does the treatment involve?

Initially, we remove the decayed part of your affected tooth, making sure none is left behind. We use local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort.

We apply an acidic gel to your tooth, which creates tiny holes to allow the composite material to bond effectively. We then carefully wash this away, dry your tooth and add a priming agent to further promote a strong bond.

We carefully match the shade of the composite to your existing teeth to make sure your filling blends in seamlessly. It is applied in layers and moulded into the desired shape. The composite is hardened using a special UV light and professionally polished for a natural appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What do I need to do to look after my composite filling?

The best way to look after your composite filling is to keep up with a regular brushing and flossing routine, taking care to prevent any decay from forming. Simply consider it as part of your natural tooth.

  • Does having a composite filling hurt?

No, having a composite filling shouldn’t be painful. You may feel some discomfort, but we use local anaesthetic to minimise this, and make sure you are feeling relaxed and ready before we begin treatment.

  • How long will my composite filling last?

Modem composite fillings are strong and durable, and can last for up to 10 years without issue. The longevity of your restoration can depend on the depth of the cavity or the position of the treated tooth in your mouth. Your dentist will be best placed to advise you. If necessary, composite fillings are quick and easy to replace, needing just a single appointment to complete.

  • Why should I choose a composite filling over amalgam?

Composite fillings are very popular due to their aesthetic appeal. Many patients no longer like the look of silver in their mouths, and can have concerns over the metal used in amalgam. Composite fillings are safe, secure and successful.

  • Do composite fillings take longer to place?

Composite fillings are slightly more difficult to place than silver fillings, so may take your dentist 15-20 minutes longer to complete. They are considered a cosmetic treatment.

  • I currently have amalgam fillings - can they be replaced?

Yes! We are happy to replace your old silver amalgam fillings with modern and aesthetically pleasing composite. Please contact us if you would like to know more.
