What is a Dental Veneer

A dental veneer is a simple, comfortable and quick way to transform the look of a damaged, stained or twisted tooth.

A change with a veneer can be subtle or highly noticeable. Whether you’d like to change the size, shape, colour or position of one or more teeth a veneer will allow you to gain a beautiful and natural looking smile with the minimum of fuss.

A veneer is a very thin layer of a man-made material which is attached to the front surface of a tooth. They are normally used on the front upper and lower teeth. Usually they are made from ceramic, porcelain or composite. The process is quick, painless and requires very little preparation time.

What is involved?

It will take around 2 appointments to fit a veneer- although this may be longer if you require several.

First, we will need to prepare your existing tooth by removing a tiny amount of enamel from the surface. This creates space for the veneer to sit perfectly in line with your existing teeth.
When it is ready, we will take an impression of the tooth so that we can custom make your new veneer. The shade of your veneer will be carefully matched using a colour chart.

Once your brand new veneer is ready (usually around a week later) it can be attached to your old tooth. Firstly it will be checked for fit, size and colour. Once we are sure it looks perfect we will slightly abrade the front surface of your old tooth to help the veneer stick securely. We will then attach it with a dental adhesive.

Protecting your veneers

As your veneer is made from strong and durable material it has the potential to last for many years. Do remember though that a veneer can be easily damaged.

Biting and chewing of hard foods (such as ice or bones) could break your veneers, whilst habits such as fingernail or pen biting could all potentially knock them loose.

If you do have any issues at any time please contact us straight away.
